Our Salix breeding programme started already in the 1980:s. SW Seed is a world leading Salix breeder and the industry standard SW Tora is the most popular variety across Europe.
The programme produce varieties for Europe and Russia and takes place at our breeding station in Svalöv.
Salix is grown primarily for short rotation coppice for energy purposes. Other uses include water absorbent, bioremediation, nutrient leakage prevention, waste water treatment and restoring agricultural land.
High yield in dry matter production and resistance against insects and diseases are the most important breeding targets. Other targets include draught or frost resistance and other climatic factors. New varieties are tested in minimum two harvest cycles before taken to the market. The varieties are thereafter proven high yielding and robust.
