Lantmännen Lantbruk is transferring the south Swedish spring barley program to the French plant breeding company Secobra.
Secobra will continue to run the program from Svalöv which means that they will buy services from Lantmännen Lantbruk. This will ensure a critical mass of plant breeding operations in Svalöv. Lantmännen will continuously run the program for early spring barley in Lännäs.
“We want to create the right conditions for competitive plant breeding, particularly for our Nordic domestic market, which has special conditions that we need to take into account. The partnership with Secobra will ensure a stronger plant breeding program directed towards the Swedish market. At the same time we will gain marketing and sales rights to the varieties in Sweden, Finland and the Baltics, says Johan Andersson, Head of Sector at Lantmännen Lantbruk.
Lantmännen will also continue to represent other varieties from other plant breeding companies in order to have the strongest product portfolio in Sweden.
The plant breeding sector needs to increase its investments in development. The investments involved are extensive and long-term, which is placing greater demands on individual companies. This is therefore resulting in more alliances and partnerships. It has also led to a major structural change and consolidation in the industry.
“Strategic partnerships are something we are looking for to help us increase our flexibility and successfully develop our product portfolio for the market. It is important to work with other companies in this area if we want to strengthen Swedish breeding, as competition is really tough at the moment,” says Peter Annas, Director Plant breeding and international operations at Lantmännen Lantbruk.
